Portishead is back!

Third

Portishead:
Third

[Island; 2008]
Rating: 8.8

Can an album really be a departure if it’s the first thing a group’s released in 11 years? It ideally would be for a genre-bound band turned brand name like Portishead: As much as there is to miss about the mid-late 1990s, the time for any trip-hop revival is far into the future, and picking up right where they left off in 1997 would make Portishead some kind of sad cipher coasting on the fumes of an exhausted trend– something they’ve always been above. If the voice of Beth Gibbons wasn’t so ingrained in the consciousness of a whole generation of indie kids, you could look at Third as a sort of re-debut; it posits that the sound of Portishead can actually exist even after the group excises every possible remnant of trip-hop from it.

The Wave Interactive LED Coffee Table

LED_Table.jpg

by Doug Black

A real godsend for those of us in need of constant visual stimulus, the Oakland-based group Because We Can has devised a way to interact with your coffee table. The “Design-Build studio” teamed up with the tech whizzes from Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories to create an LED Coffee Table dubbed The Wave. They fitted the table with 480 bright LED lights, along with 32 near infrared optical sensors. The result is a surface that reacts to any motion by following it with a cascade of glowing light. In a dormant state, the table subtle twinkles, adding a touch of class to any living room. And even at its most active state, the low-power LEDs use far less power than a single conventional lightbulb.

You can chose between a fully clear or frosted tabletop and any combination of LED colors. Since each table is made to your particular specifications, expect a lengthy wait time and hefty price tag (about 10 weeks and $2,215). Order from Because We Can’s online store.

Andy Uprock is a Cuprocker

Andy Uprock is a Cuprocker

No, cuprockers don’t have big, teased hair… nor do they have reality TV shows on VH1. Cuprocking is a unique form of art invented by Sydney-based artist Any Uprock. You see, he takes thousands of plastic cups, varying in color and artistically places them in the holes of your ordinary wire fence. Uprock has been bombing the streets of Sydney for a while now, but is currently on an 8 city tour to spread the word. Paris, London, Barcelona, L.A. & N.Y. have all been witness, with Tokyo, Hong Kong & Kuala Lumpur next on deck. Go here for more details on this fun concept.

14 oz. Store Berlin

Last week saw the opening of the new 14 oz. store in Berlin. Right in the heart ofBerlin Mitte, close to other favorites of ours such as A.P.C., Nort and Firmament, the new store opened.

14 oz. already existed in Cologne from 1999-2003 and then the founder moved on to start the Bread & Butter tradeshow. Now he has decided to re-open it, but in Berlin. 14 oz. as you might have guessed by the name already, specializes in denim and carries brands such as Earnest Sewn, Atelier LaDurance, Levi’s, Wrangler and many others. They also carry other great brands including Dunderdon and Steven Alan.

Bottom line, it is definitely worth a visit on your next Berlin trip.
